Apparatus for the testing of bulky nonwovens up to 20mm and greater than 20mm.
Bulky nonwovens are defined as those that compress by more than 20% when tested with pressures of 0.1 kPa and 0.5 kPa. Examples include wadding and high-loft products. Bulky nonwovens up to a maximum thickness of 20mm should be tested on this apparatus.
The specimen is held vertically between a vertical reference plate and a presser foot by means of a clamp. The hand screw is turned to adjust the presser foot until the pressure exerted on the sample is 0.02kPa. This is indicated by illuminating a light.

Wira Thickness Gauge for bulky nonwovens greater than 20mm
[Instrument pictured below] The specimen is placed on a base plate and covered by a glass plate, the pressure exerted on the sample is 0.02 kPa.
The measuring arm is lowered until the pointer touches the surface of the glass plate.
The thickness is read from the digital display.
